Weatherbys
Weatherbys provides British Horseracing with its central administration, acts as its bank and maintains the founding Thoroughbred breed register. Weatherbys' role in providing administrative services to the British Racing industry is fundamental. The key services are covered under our contract with the British Horseracing Board.
This contract specifies the day-to-day work which must be undertaken to ensure the smooth running of the sport throughout Britain. We process all registrations of ownership, of colours, of horse names and horses in training. We receive all race entries and declarations. We allocate the weights to be carried in all races, and hold the central file of handicap ratings. We receive all jockey bookings, and, following final race declaration, conduct the stalls draw, race divisions and any necessary eliminations. Whereupon we issue the final, official lists of runners and riders. We receive and disseminate the going reports for all British racecourses.
For over 200 years the Stud Book Department has been dedicated to providing services to breeders in Britain and Ireland. We undertake the formal registration of mares, foals and stallions, both Thoroughbred and Non-Thoroughbred, to ensure the integrity of bloodlines upon which breeding and racing industries worldwide depend. The definitive ancestry record for Thoroughbreds is The General Stud Book.
Our Breeding area also includes Bloodstock Services where, amongst other things, an experienced team of pedigree researchers edit catalogue pages for all the major sales companies in Great Britain and Ireland. This expertise allows us to diversify into producing private stud books for many important owner/breeders and collating information for an essential range of Weatherbys' publications such as The Stallion Book, The Statistical Record, The Bloodstock Sales Review and Thoroughbred Sales Guide to name but a few. Weatherbys offers a range of commercial products and services which have evolved from our key role in the administration of Racing and Breeding.
In the Printing area, we are regarded as the "Industry Printer", looking after a wide range of clients, from Industry associations, trade bodies, racecourses and bookmakers. We have many other business services, including Data Supply, Ticketing Fulfillment, Betting Guides and Point-to-Point. For many years, Weatherbys has been the premier supplier of racecard services to racecourses throughout Great Britain. In 2006, our Racecard Department will produce racecards for over 1,340 race meetings at 57 courses, with a total print run in excess of 4,000,000 cards.
Weatherbys also provides a range of financial services. Weatherbys Bank grew out of the accounting service that has long been undertaken for Racing. Granted a full deposit taking license by the Bank of England in 1994, it is now a modern private bank offering a full range of services in addition to providing anyone engaged in Racing with an efficient means of conducting their financial transactions. We do not have a branch network, but clients conduct their business by phone or online. Account holders may be issued with VISA debit cards and cheque books. You do not need any involvement in horseracing to open an account with Weatherbys Bank. The Bank has an asset finance subsidiary, specialising in small ticket leasing throughout the UK. We offer bloodstock and other insurance through our in-house Insurance Agency. We are the market leader in maximising benefits accruing to racehorse owners under Racing's VAT Scheme, and we offer an efficient VAT Returns service. Owners can subcontract us to perform completion of all material relating to their VAT recovery.
Weatherbys has representatives present on many race days throughout the year and there will always be a Weatherbys' representative at our race sponsorships (158 races in 2006).
